The Entrance to Poets' Corner -Westminster Abbey

Entrance to Poets' Corner - Westminster Abbey  18" x 10" Pen & Ink  John Simlett
After all that work, the photograph is awful, out of focus and it's far too light (half the shading is missing). I might try again later.

If you are wondering, the actual entrance is along the footpath, under the arches to that little white doorway in the distance.

Depressed!

  1. Quit knocking your photograph! I get the picture! I saw this a s soon as it popped onto my page. This drawing is phenomenal John--now take down that etching and-- No. Hang this next to the etching--or close by. Your work is fastidious and you love your subject of you couldn't do such (I hate this word, the last generation wrecked it) awesome. (Don't hold this word against me--but it is true).

    1. Hilda, thank you so very much, you really are kind. It takes me a week or two to decide if I like my stuff, all I can see is the bits I would have done differently.

Loved your picture of you as a schoolgirl, so cleverly done.

  3. Bless you, Linda, you lifted my spirits no end ...although I'm not sure why I was down over a silly photograph. The next one is to be a bit of a sidestep: an old Tramp Steamer moored quayside in Newcastle (NE England), from a 1927 photograph. Looks tricky ... thank goodness.

  4. It looks fabulous, John! I think the level of your skill comes through where the photo may not be to your liking. I found that photographing my work in my laundry room that only has fluorescent light has given me the best results. It is depressing when you get all the way to the end and then the camera won't cooperate. You do wonderful work!!!!

    1. Thanks Celeste, I'm glad you like it ... the strong sunlight is too strong though, the picture is quite dark.

  6. Thanks Carrie, appreciate you kind comments. It's the sort of scene that works so well as a large picture - the problem is some of the fine lines disappear when reduced to a quarter full size, turning quite a dark picture into a light one. At least If I get prints made they will be full size.

I'm drawing the Castle at Richmond, Yorkshire, UK. But it's not a fairytale castle, and a most unusual view! Should be ready in a day or two.
